A few days ago we talked about headline titles and how creating compelling headlines can help you grab the attention of your readers. If you missed that post you can check it out here. OK so today we’re looking at that all important opening paragraph of your blog posts.
The first paragraph of any written article, whether it’s a blog post or a guest article or an email newsletter, or even the opening of your sales page, has to be interesting enough to grab the interest of your readers. It has to let them know what they’re in for. So here’s a little tip, don’t beat around the bush! I’m sure you’ve heard that saying before.
What I mean by this is don’t leave the best stuff till last because the majority of your readers won’t be bothered to read the full length of your article or even scroll down as far to find out what it is you’re ranting on about.
Why make your readers wait? Why make them read filler paragraphs after paragraphs before getting to the good stuff? They want to know what the point of your post is, so let them know straight away. Get to the juicy bits of the article straight away in your first paragraph, then go into more detail later on in your article.
Think about this carefully, you do your utmost best to capture your readers attention with a great headline title, then you go and waste the opportunity by putting out a crappy opening paragraph. That’s not the way to do it.
If your readers become genuinely interested and intrigued by your opening paragraph, if they feel YES this could the post I’ve been searching for or this sounds interesting, chances are they will continue to read the rest of your article, or perhaps scan it further to find the best part of it.
What NOT to do…
However having said that creating an explosive opening paragraph is important, don’t use this opportunity to misguide readers into believing that the post is something that it’s not. Stay focused and stay on topic.
So how do you write a great opening paragraph?
Glad you asked, here are some tips:
- Start off with a question to your readers
- Use relevant statistics (Get statistics to use in your blog posts here)
- Give your opinion right off the bat (then give reasons throughout your post)
