The whole subject of ‘making money online’ to a lot of people who have already tried doing it and failed, is a well and truly exhausted subject I can understand.
But seriously though, when we talk about the subject of earning money online, a lot of people will either turn their backs or will tell you that ‘it’s all a scam’, before actually hearing what you have to say.
Well unfortunately a lot of people in this society have the belief that the word ‘scam’ has to be associated with the phrase ‘making money online’. I mean the number of people I’ve spoken to, even friends and families, they just don’t believe you can earn a living from the internet.
So is making money online a scam?
No and yes… Yes if you’ve been sold into buying silly systems or online courses that contain nothing but false promises you see advertised all over the web, and no it’s not a scam if you approach it from a business perspective and entrepreneurial mindset. That’s right, people forget that there are a lot of people who actually have businesses online, which makes them money would you believe, so how can running a business online be tarred as a scam I wonder?
It is possible to make money online and you can do it without having the wool pulled over your eyes, in other words be told a pack of lies or led down some scammy alley where you’ve been fooled into buying crappy money making systems and courses that don’t work.
I myself have made some good money online over the last few years with blogging and running an ecommerce website and other online businesses, and no I didn’t need to waste money on silly eBooks, courses or worst still, money making systems that are full of false promises.
It is possible, and in many cases you can actually make money online without spending money to do it!
So now I’ve got that bit out of the way, I want to share with you 23 absolute awesome ways to build a business and make money online without spending a penny, well when I said without spending a penny, what I actually meant really was without spending much money!
Make Money Online Without Spending Money To Do It!
1. Start blogging
Blogging is nothing new, but it’s something that I’ve seen more and more people doing over they years. I think the idea that you can make money from blogging sparked off from successful people that are actually doing it, like John Chow and Darren Rowse who are amongst the top earning bloggers.
Starting a blog is pretty simple, and the cost of setting up a professional WordPress blog can be extremely low, as low as just a few dollars per month. The keys to succeeding with earning money from blogging are varied, check out the following post to get an idea of what habits you need to fall into to be successful with blogging.
2. Doing affiliate marketing
Over the years I’ve enjoyed earning money from affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing co-exists well with many bloggers too, as it’s easily one of the best ways to monetize your blog, simply by promoting products and services of reputable companies and earning a commission from any sales created from your referrals to those products and services.
You don’t actually need to have a website or a blog to start making money with affiliate marketing. If you don’t want to setup your own blog, you can use blogging sites that are already set up for you such as HubPages and Squidoo.
Whether you have a blog or not, check out the following resourceful post for our top recommended affiliate programs for bloggers.

3. Sending sponsored tweets
If you have a Twitter account with thousands of targeted followers, you can make money from it; however like I said, to succeed with this you need some big followers first.
A sponsored Tweet is simply a mention of someone’s business, website, blog, product or services on your Twitter account, in the form of a single tweet. You can set how much you are willing to charge per sponsored tweet. You can use sites like SponsoredTweets.com to get started.
If you need to build more twitter followers, check out the following post.
4. Using Facebook ads
If you have your own product such as an eBook or want to attract more customers to your business services or lead capture page, consider using Facebook ads or promoted posts on your Facebook business page.
5. Selling your own products
You can sell your own products pretty much anywhere online these days, ideally you would want to sell products on your own website or your blog as these this would be the most cost effective. But if you don’t have your own website or blog you can use sites like Amazon, eJunkie or ClickBank to sell digital products such as your own eBook
Before you sell anything though, make sure you first have a truly awesome and valuable product worth selling and shouting about.
6. Selling stuff on eBay
eBay is still by far the the king of buying and selling stuff online as far as I’m concerned, but then again there is Amazon.
Unfortunately eBay may not be the cost effective option. Back in 2006 I built my first online art business with the help of eBay, as I used the platform to promote my artwork, little did I know a few months down the line I’d be raking in over $3,000 per month selling art on eBay.
If you’re thinking about starting a business selling on eBay check out the following post.
7. Creating and selling your own Kindle book
We mentioned about selling eBooks, but what about writing your own Amazon Kindle eBook?
Amazon Kindle books have rocketed in popularity over the recent years, largely thanks to tablet computers and smartphones. Come to think of it, all the books I read these days are on my Kindle App for my iPad. If you think you’ve got something worth writing about and turning into a Kindle eBook, check out this post on how to get the job done right >> The Ultimate Guide to Publishing Your eBook on Amazon’s Kindle Platform.
8. Offering web services
If you have a skill, sell it! There are people out there willing to pay good money for skills and services they can’t do themselves, such as HTML and web design, internet marketing services, SEO, website management etc. You can use your own blog to promote your services and create a client guide in PDF format. You can also promote your services using sites like Fiverr.
9. Freelance writing, copywriting
There are tons of online companies and website owners out there searching for good copywriters and content creators. If you’re skilled in writing, consider signing up to sites like Elance to promote your content writing services.
10. Selling your services on Fiverr
Fiverr is an exciting and relatively new way to make money online, by again selling your services for $5. If you can create an actionable SEO report for someone, design a cool website logo or record a professional podcast intro, sell it on Fiverr!

12. Adding Google AdSense to your content rich web pages
AdSense is a third party contextual advertising revenue network by Google which allows you to place relevant ads on your website or your blog. AdSense is one of the most widely used methods of website monetization.
However, the process of adding AdSense ads to your site is much easier than actually earning money from it, as to be successful with Google AdSense, you need to be generating a lot of search engine traffic, as well as know how to optimize your content and ad placements for increased CTR.
13. Selling photos online
One of the biggest successes on the internet today is the diversity of images being made available online, largely through social networking sites, content curation sites, Pinterest, Flickr and the rest. If you’re a bit of a photographer yourself then why not consider trying to sell some of your high quality images on sites like iStock or PhotoBucket. Or even better still, why not start your own photography blog.
14. Filling in online surveys
This is quite a tedious, in fact it’s probably one of the most boring and time wasting ways to make money online, I’ve tried it myself and I hated it, you earn so little from hours of work that’s probably bad for your health anyways… But as they say every penny counts and it’s an option, so if you fancy filling in online surveys all day for extra pennies then register yourself with iPoll and other similar sites that offer such services.
15. Become a freelance web designer
More and more businesses are looking to increase their web presence, i.e. build a website, but luckily many of those businesses don’t have a clue as to where to start. That’s where you come in. If you have knowledge in website building and coding, consider setting yourself up as a freelance web designer. You could start with small projects for individual and work your way up slowly.
16. Offer SEO services
We mentioned this earlier in offering services, but I wanted to add it here to highlight it further.
Do you realize how many businesses and bloggers have been affected by Google Panda and Penguin? Well I’m one of them. Companies outsource SEO services all the time, because they don’t have the time or have anyone skilled enough in their company to do it for them.
A fantastic and profitable way to make money on the internet is by helping those small business owners and individuals with their SEO needs, especially if you have the skills yourself. You don’t need a degree to do SEO, you just need to have a lot of experience and knowledge in my mind.
17. Offer internet marketing services
There are many small businesses that don’t have the time to spend on marketing and promoting their website. If you’re a keen internet marketer yourself with some good background and knowledge on the subject, then you can really make some serious money by offering your internet marketing services to small businesses.
18. Buy and sell domains
Buying and selling domains can be a great profitable way to make money online. If you’re just starting out, buy a domain name with a domain registrar such as GoDaddy, install WordPress, add some quality original content, build some high quality backlinks to it to increase its page rank and authority, then sell it for a nice big sum of money. Easier said than done yes I know, but it’s worth a try.
19. Start your own online local business directory
The web has a lot of online directories for almost everything. If you can create a profitable business offering a directory service for a particular industry, then go for it. It could be absolutely anything, some examples would be; a directory of local restaurants, hotels and guest houses, a directory of trade persons, such as painters and decorators, plumbers and carpenters… I think you get the idea.
To get you started there’s an amazing WordPress theme designed for creating a business directory, you can check it out here >> Premium Press Themes for Businesses
20. Offer professional video recording and editing services
Everyone loves videos and companies will pay good money for a high quality video to add to their client portfolio. If video media is your thing and you’re a wiz kid at using Adobe Creative Suite and a digital video recorder, then this is a career waiting to happen. Whilst this is by far not a cost effective way to make money online as you’ll need to invest in equipment, the ROI could be huge. And if you already have this stuff lying around, then make it happen.
21. Sell graphic design services
Again, if you’re a wiz kid at graphic design or have experience with Photoshop, how about creating your own graphic banners and web pages and flogging them online. You could set up a business in get t-shirt printing and sign writing too.
22. Create company logos
Online businesses, bloggers, website owners love to have their own unique image. Brand awareness is everything in this day and age, so it’s those kinds of establishments that will be looking for professional logo design services. If you can offer your services in this area, then again there is money waiting to be made here.
23. Create your own online courses
At the beginning of this post I hinted that you shouldn’t waste your money on silly eBooks and online courses, and throughout this list I mentioned eBooks and now creating your own online courses as means of making money online.
Not all courses are bad, though I can appreciate a newbie would find it hard to tell the difference between a genuine course and a scammy looking one.
Anyways, if you have extensive knowledge in a specific area, or on anything at all that’s worth teaching to others, how about creating your very own online courses? You have a ton of tools at your disposal to make that happen, WordPress, YouTube, SlideShare, iTunes (Podcasts), Amazon (eBook). All these tools are there for you to use and you can build your course using any of these powerful platforms.
This list has not by all means been exhausted; there are countless other ways to make money online, some are costly to setup whilst some wont cost you much money at all. It’s up to you to find what methods you’d like use to create a business and earn money on the internet with. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading through the list, now go and make a start on one of them at least.
