3 Crucial Tips For Managing A Multi-Author Blog

I love guest blogging, because with a single guest post, you can reap many benefits.

Guest blogging is by far the most authentic way to attract more attention, build more quality links, get connected with more people, create more leads, generate more traffic and many other benefits, than any other blog marketing tactic out there, and all just by getting one ‘quality’ guest post published on any great blog in your niche (like I am doing right now on Magnet4Marketing).

If you are running a single author blog up until now and are thinking about turning it into a community, (multi-author blog) then you’ve arrived at the right post.  Today I’m going to share with you some great tips which will help you manage a multi-author blog more efficiently and on a professional level too.

Managing a multi-author blog is completely different from managing a blog where you are the soul writer, there are some things you need to bare in mind to get the best possible results.

If you’re already getting good results with your blog by being the only author, then you’re going to get much better results after converting it into a community driven blog, why? Because people from various corners of your niche will be sharing their own thoughts and expertise on your blog, and whats more, your readers will be getting access to quality content from writers each with a unique voice.

Let’s begin.

1. Set strong guidelines

Writing a firm list of guest post guidelines is the first critical step to starting a multi author blog.  Explain each part very clearly, and make sure that these guidelines are the same for each and every person that is interested in writing for your blog.

Note: There might be a rare case when one of your close friends will request that you void a single rule just for him/her.  This could be anything from inserting links inside the article body, inserting affiliate links, inserting 3-4 links in author bio even, but try and avoid making exceptions, and set the same rules for everyone.

Here are some tips for creating firm guidelines

  • Your editorial voice – Help your contributors to understand your blog’s editorial voice, and make sure that they are following it throughout.
  • Your site’s categories – Make sure that they are writing content for a targeting category on your blog.  Publishing a post on social media tips on a health blog will be completely useless and a waste of time, so suggest to anyone interested in guest blogging for your blog to go through your blog’s main categories before pitching their guest post ideas to you.
  • Your style – We all have different writing styles on our blogs.  some writers might use short paragraphs on posts, whilst others might use longer paragraphs.  Try to explain about the formatting preferences for your blog, and suggest to guest bloggers that they use bullets, numbers, paragraphs, white spaces and other editorial elements in their article.
  • Affiliate links – You might allow affiliate links inside the article body or you might not.  It’s entirely up to you in this case.  In my personal opinion if you choose to accept affiliate links on your blog, then you can encourage more quality articles from industry experts.
  • Us of images policy – Suggest to your guest authors that they use images with creative common license and give credit at the footer of the article.

2. Help writers to manage everything easily

Try to help your authors/contributors by giving them appropriate rights.

Currently I am using Capability manager plugin on my blog.  This plugin allows me to give certain rights and privileges to my authors.

Let’s start with this…

1. Login to your WordPress dashboard.

2. Click on Setting > General

3. See New User Default Role in your settings and decide which default role you want to give to a brand new author.

Note: make sure that you have unticked anyone can register box under membership option in your settings.  In my experience and I’m sure as with many other multi-blog authors too, leaving this ticked can encourage spammy registrations to your blog.

Now do this…

Install Capability Manager plugin on your blog.

In Users > Capabilities select that particular role (Author in my case).

Now choose what capabilities to give that author, here I’m giving capability to upload files.

If you want to give any additional roles then you can assign each one very easily using this plugin as you can see in the image above.

3. Keep engagement flowing

The idea of guest blogging is to generate as many returning visitors to your blog, and to convert them into loyal readers.

Your author or contributor has submitted one article on your blog and he or she has left.  They may either return to check your blog daily for new comments, or they may come back in a week’s time to answer all of the comments in one go.

You want to encourage your guest writers to visit each time a comment has been left, so to keep the engagement flowing.  To encourage this, there are a couple of great plugins you can use, let’s take a look.

The first plugin which I’m going to recommend is called Comment Reply by Admins Notifier.

What this plugin does is when someone leaves a comment on your post, they will automatically receive a notification when there is a reply or comment update on that post.  This is particularly useful for contributors as they are then notified of new comments, which will encourage them to come back, reply and engage further, thus driving returning visitors to your blog.

The second plugin which I would like to suggest is Peter’s Collaboration E-mails.

Now this is a great plugin and I must say it is one of the most essential plugins for a multi-author blog.  This plugin will notify guest bloggers about the status of their articles on your blog.

So if you delete, put into draft or publish a guest article, then the author of that article will receive one email notifying them of the current status of their article.
