Blogging really isn’t that hard, you just pick a topic you want to talk about, find a web host and install WordPress, or even better get a free blog with WordPress or Blogger and start ranting about your favourite topic every day or other day… Easy stuff anyone can do it, absolutely anyone, it’s really no big deal.
Not anyone can create a blog and bring something new, fresh and inspiring to the round table each time they go to publish a post.
Not anyone can woo over their audience with content that is simply awesome and provokes all kinds of thoughts afterwards.
Not anyone can create content that is going to help so many people who might have a problem with something or another.
Unfortunately one of the many reasons why some blog’s crash and burn or go stale after a while, is because either the blogger has reached a critical point where they can no longer get over the ‘what the hell am I going to write next’ wall. Or worst still… they start to sound like a broken record. Yes a broken record, record, record, record…
What I mean by this is that they start re-posting stuff and mashing up content that they’ve already covered several times before on their blogs. Eventually their readers will begin to notice and they’ll simply abandon ship and go elsewhere.
I’ll be honest, I’m all for re-purposing content for the good, I do it myself on many occasions and at the moment I’m into creating my own infographics and will be re-launching my podcast very soon. But my point is that there is only so many times you can write about why WordPress is the greatest blogging platform in the world, before people get bored and start pulling their eye lids over their heads…
So let me ask you… Is your blog beginning to sound like a broken record or perhaps starting too? If so, here’s some ways to fix this before it’s too late.
5 Ways to NOT Make your Blog Sound Like a Broken Record
1. Write Less
If you’ve picked a really tight niche such as ‘Rose pruning’ you’re going to struggle finding topics to write about everyday, fact.
So my first tip for you would be to obviously write less, much less. If you’re writing for the sake of just updating your blog with something! Forget it, that old myth that you need to write everyday to stay on top of your game, its bullsh$t.
Refer to the recent guest post by Mauro D’Andrea, where he discussed the issues and consequences of writing excessively and sacrificing quality over quaintly, and more over not having enough time to dedicate to other areas of improving your blog. You can find this post here –
2. Diversify your Topics
What does this mean? Let’s look at the example above where you blog about ‘Rose pruning’. You can diversify your topics by writing not just about rose pruning, but about growing and looking after roses in general, i.e. what cutters to best use, when and when not to prune, how to look after container roses, what do to with your fresh cuttings, what compost to use etc, what are the best rose plant food and minerals to use. Heck! I’m no Rose growing fanatic but maybe I should start a blog on growing roses… that was a joke.
But really don’t just stick to writing about one thing just because you made your blog this way, It’s never too late to diversify the topics in your niche.
3. Bring in Guest Writers
Guest writers take a huge load of your back when it comes to providing your blog with fresh content, especially when you’re stuck for post ideas. Not only does this bring a totally new perspective to your blog, but it gives you the chance to focus on creating more quality content for your blog in a variety of niche related topics.
4. Diversify your Medium
5. Break up your Content
Finally look at your old top performing posts and find a new post within, often you can generate tons more great content for your blog just by looking closer to home. Create a list of possible post ideas for the future. Check out our post on breaking down to create new content for your blog –
So, don’t let your blog become a nasty old broken record. Don’t become obsessed with writing too often about the same topic, give one or two of the methods above consideration and breathe new life into your blog.
