Can Drinking Water Really Help You Blog Better and Lose Weight at the same time?

You drink when you’re thirsty. You eat when you’re hungry…and sometimes when you’re not. We tend to overestimate the number of calories our bodies need but underestimate the amount of water we should consume.

If you’re like most bloggers and spend a lot of your time sitting in a comfortable temperature-controlled room by your computer, then you probably don’t feel thirsty very often. When you do, you might reach for a soda or coffee instead of water. Here’s why you should rethink this habit:

• Drinking water can help you lose weight.
• Drinking water can help you write better.
• Drinking water can encourage exercise.

How to reprogram food cravings with more water intake

When your body is thirsty, it can sometimes feel like you’re actually hungry. You get a craving for something, and may just reach for the closest accessible thing. Instead of falling for this knee-jerk reaction, take a minute to figure out what your body really needs: Have you eaten in the last few hours? If so, you probably don’t need food. Drink a glass of water and wait a half hour. If you’re still getting “hungry” signals, try a light snack of fruit or veggies.

You can help prevent overeating by drinking a full glass of water a few minutes before each meal, eating less and more frequently, and eating quietly.

Drinking a full glass of water before eating will make you feel full faster and likely stop your eating when your stomach is actually satisfied. Eating more frequent, smaller meals throughout the day rather than loading up on one or two meals can help your body determine when it is actually hungry and when you’re just bored or auto-eating. A home-delivery food service, like Medifast and Nutrisystem, is a great option for bloggers who want to eat healthy without spending a ton of time preparing meals.

Bloggers are especially prone to overeating, as we can eat while working. When we eat distractedly, we tend to forget that we can stop eating when we’re full. Instead, eat without a computer or television and see when you finish your meal.

How drinking water helps you become a better writer

Drinking water and exercising help us to naturally detoxify our bodies. If you’re like most bloggers, you probably spend a lot of time sitting in front of your computer and not a lot of time at the gym. You might also follow the “blogger’s diet,” which consists of whatever is close and single-hand edible. While your exercise routine and new diet may be on hold, just drinking water can help cleanse out the toxins that build up from junk food and lack of exercise.

When the toxins are free to move out of our bodies, our circulation can improve, meaning we feel more energized, think more clearly and can ease weight loss. When you feel better, you work better. When you work better, your blogging goes from good to great.

Break for Movement

Increasing your water intake will also increase your bathroom breaks. This is a perfect, well-timed exercise and stretch reminder for our bodies. When you get up to use the restroom, take a minute first to stretch. This will wake up your body and get your blood moving through your body. Lunge your way to the bathroom to get the circulation flowing through your legs, then skip your way back. If you work in an office, you can substitute these for more subtle, in-your-office moves.

I do all the things about which you wrote above. I drink 2 full glasses of water within a day, even id I don’t want it. And I play table tennis 2 times a day, to keep fit

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

2 glasses sound like a sensible amount, I’d probably manage the same if I didn’t drink so much coffee, though I’m trying to cut down recently. Table tennis sounds like an active sport, I love to surf when possible but realistically I need more exercise lol

  • Simmeon

    Hey, Natasha

    I’m guilty.
Rarely do I drink water, only when eating dinner and that’s about it.
Think I need to hydrate myself a lot more throughout the day.

  • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Agreed, I try and drink as much fluid during the day as possible but admittedly it’s mostly in the form of caffeine. I must try and drink more water though I’m not too sure I want to lose weight :) Great guest post Natasha, thank you.

  • Samantha Wright

Wonderful post Natasha, I think we do underestimate the importance of keeping hydrated throughout the day, bloggers I know are notorious soda and coffee drinkers which isn’t good. You made some good points. I work in a busy office environment and we have access to a water cooler so I make every effort to fight of any hunger pangs by drinking water. Thanks again.

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Yeah I use to work in an office with access to water cooler too, I might just have to get one for home use :)

  • Trixie

I don’t really drink water often enough, but reading this, I might change that habit, I see how important it is to keep body hydrated. Thank you for sharing this.

  • Tan

It is known fact that drinking water can help you lose weight and remove feeling of hunger, nice article.

  • Ayla

A very interesting article. I really enjoyed reading it and found it very informative. I guess it would make sense that keeping ourselves well hydrated would make a huge impact on being better writers since being hydrated is an important aspect of a healthy working body. Personally, I make sure I drink 8 or more glasses a day. If not, at least a minimum of 6 glasses. Thanks for posting this article. :)

    • Samantha Wright

      @Ayla Wow, 8 glasses, that’s more than I could manage ;)

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Hey Ayla, I’m surprised by the 8 glasses per day, would there be any room for food I wonder lol :)

  • Sarah

I admit it, drinking water has really got these benefits, but I think that 8 glasses is too much, it always depends on the person, to define the quantity.

  • Jean

Thanks a lot for the info. I will have to replace the more coffee I take when I am blogging with water. Hope I will manage :-)

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Hey Jean thanks for stopping by and commenting. Best of luck with your improved water intake :)

  • Daquan Wilson

What a informative article from your about drinking water can help us!!! Totally I agree with you about this post. Nobody live without water. So, I think your nice sharing is so important to everybody. Thanks a lot for your well post.

  • Becca

I have glass of water beside my working table even the season is hot or cold. Drinking coffee is not god for my body for more than a year so water or fresh juice i have always. You right water can lose calories, losing weight and stop for craving for food. But for me I still craving for food :)

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Hey Becca I agree with you water doesn’t really stop me from feeling hungry. Fruit juices is a great idea though I often like to have Cranberry juice in my fridge lol.

  • Ehsan @ GuideAndNews

    Hey Natasha,
Thanks for letting us know about the advantages of drinking water. You’re right, whenever I feel thirsty I take coffee instead of water because I didn’t know about the benefits of drinking water.
    I will follow this tips.
    Thanks again.

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Coffee is great for keeping us awake and in moderation, water intake should be more important though as it also helps to flush our systems of toxins. Thanks for stopping by :)

  • Ashleen Moreen

Great perspective and anatomy in drinking water. Drinking a lot of water per day is very important and I really do believe that it helps to lose weight.

  • Mariella Lombardi

Hi Natasha, I do try to drink lots of water and with this heat wave it is not hard at all. Just remember to replenish the salts/minerals too!

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Hey Mariella, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I have to say though I’m envious of your heat wave as we’ve had nothing but rain for over 2 months none stop here in England :) All the best.

  • Jessica

This is a really great article. I completely agree that we need to keep our bodies well hydrated for it to function properly. I don’t know about everybody else but I tend to feel like I’m over-heating if I’m not well hydrated. It it very important for us to drink lots of water. Not only does it keep us cool, it also helps in weight loss.
