How to Get More Traffic from Blog Commenting

Every serious blogger loves reading and commenting on other blogs. If you don’t do this then there is something seriously wrong. Blog commenting is nothing new I know, but it is a great way to engage with other bloggers and add value to the blogosphere. It has many other benefits also, from helping you to build high quality backlinks to your own blog, to increasing referral traffic, that means getting free traffic.

As you know building high quality and natural looking backlinks has never been more important in SEO, especially since the recent Google updates.

In today’s post we’re going to look at some effective tips and suggestions on how to use blog commenting more effectively to get more traffic to your blog, and also build natural looking backlinks.

OK let’s begin at looking at how you can improve your blog commenting antics and get more traffic from your off-page SEO efforts.

blog commenting

Comment on do-follow blogs

Commenting on dofollow blogs is my first big tip for building backlinks, doing this will benefit your blog greatly as far as search engine link juice is concerned, though these days many blogs have now become , to help tackle the ever-growing problem of spam, especially of recent times.

Comment on blogs that have CommentLuv enabled

CommentLuv plugin makes commenting on other blog a pleasurable experience with many benefits, from allowing you to display a link to your latest blog post tor tweet, which gives you additional online exposure to your blog’s content.

Be the first to leave a comment

This is a great tactic to use and if done regularly can help you increase referral traffic to your blog quickly. The best way to ensure you’re one of the first to comment on a new post on your favourite blog is to subscribe to the email or RSS updates of those blogs.

By being the first person to comment on a post means that you will get the most exposure to your comment, and therefore increase the chances of having your website link clicked on by users. So if you are one of the first or the first person to comment, make it a good one.

Have a face

Use a valid Gravatar to show others who you are, with a Gravatar you’re more likely to attract more people clicking over to your site, and foremost having your comment approved and not thrown to the wolves of the spam folder.

Create a commenting calendar

Use a commenting calendar to ensure that you leave comments on blogs frequently so it becomes a regular habit.

Say something useful every time…

When I say, say something useful I mean don’t come across as a comment spammer. Write more than just two lines of text… If you’re doing ethical blog commenting you should have read the post before leaving a comment. Post your own thoughts, ideas and suggestions. Read what comments others have left and reply to those comments even. The more value you add, the more likely people will want to check out your blog.

Find out what blog’s are bringing you the most referral traffic

Google Analytics is a great place to find which blogs are producing you the most referral traffic. Head over to traffic sources and view all referral traffic, pick out the blogs (If there are any already) that have brought you the most traffic with the lowest bounce rate, in the last couple of months and place more emphasis on commenting on those blogs.

Share your tips and suggestions…

Now it’s time for you to have your say, share with us your blog commenting strategies, tips and suggestions for getting more traffic from blog commenting. What are your thoughts and reactions on my tips above? Leave me a comment as always.

I agree with you that we must have a gravatar, at least they know we are real person but not spammer. Anyway, I would say that as long as you write genuine comment (not those “great post” comment), people would appreciate your contribution and suggestion, then they will probably check out your blog and know more about you. Value of the comment is the most important one.

Hello Fabrizio. I have a secret way to get on top of the commenters list even though I’m not first. I like the tip about having a calender. It makes a lot of sense. I generally just go for ‘ At least 10 comments a day’. But of course they shouldn’t be willy-nilly comments. They should have strategy behind them.

  10. Hi Fabrizio, interesting post, I like the idea of the calendar, I find Twitter has become a bit of a calendar for me, everyday I use Google Alerts to find great articles to share on Twitter and regularly look at my favourite blogs looking for posts to share which means that when I find any great posts or new posts I leave comments there and then.
