How to Get Post Ideas for your Blog the Simplest Way

I know there are a lot of posts out there giving tips on how to generate post ideas for your blog, so why should you read this one? Because getting post ideas doesn’t have to involve a four week program, you can get ideas literally within a few minutes… the time it will take you to read this post.

From time to time we all hit the wall in blogging. The wall I refer to is the one that you come face-to-face with when you simply don’t have any ideas rolling around in your head, as to what to write about next on your blog… Either that or you have lazy bloggers syndrome

Blogging is a challenging feat… there will be times when you will feel overwhelmed by topic ideas that you have, and there will be times when you simply don’t. Not having any post ideas in the tank can sometimes lead to discouragement in blogging, but fret not, as in today’s short post I want to share with a few simple ideas that will help you generate post ideas for your blog.

Generating Post Ideas from External Sources

My first tip for you would be to try and generate post ideas from external sources, i.e. reading other blogs and comments, checking the forums, seeing what people are ranting about on Twitter or Facebook, listening to your favourite podcasts, reading a magazine or the local newspaper, reading an eBook, watching video’s on YouTube… and so on.

Make a rough list of post titles you might want to consider working on later, it’s good to have a few in the bag for a later date also.

Generating Post Ideas from Internal Sources

If you struggle to find anything to write about outside of your blog, take a look at your own content. See what comments people have left you on top performing posts, which is why replying to comments and striking up conversations on your blog is essential. Snoop around your email inbox’s and see what you can find, read your old posts and branch off new post ideas from the content within, email other bloggers or readers asking for their suggestions about what to write about…

5 Types of Posts to Consider

If after all that you are still struggling to find post ideas for your blog, try one of the 5 types of posts that can really help you out of a rut…

1. Write a product review post
2. Write a ‘Top 10’ post… this could be ‘top 10’ anything…
3. Write a post giving praise to another blogger whom you look up to or have inspired you, avoid the celebrity bloggers, they probably won’t even acknowledge you…
4. Hold a blog contest (this can certainly bring your community together)
5. Create a ‘how to’ post

So there you have it, short and sweet and some useful ways to get post ideas for your blog.

What are your suggestions?

If you have any of your own suggestions please do take a couple of minutes to share them with us in the comment section below as always. I look forward in hearing them… Enjoy.

One way I generate ideas when writing a blog post is to check out Google trends or trending topics on Twitter. If there’s a hot subject there that I can relate to the nature of the blog I am writing for, I use that. I haven’t had the time to check how successful those kind of posts are though.

Hi Jess thanks for stopping by :) Yes you’re right Google trends is a great tool to use for seeing what topics are hot and getting post ideas from, thanks for adding this.

    Hi Fabrizio,
I think comments are a terrific source of ideas. They are so important both to the blogger and the commenter. Sometimes they offer ideas and sometimes just that pat on the back that a blogger might need. It’s news from your fans!!

Very true Ann, I’ve found many post ideas generated from comments on my blog or a comment on Facebook etc. A pat on the back is always a good feeling :)

I also get a lot of great ideas from the comments of my readers. This is great, especially if I have a reader who thinks outside the box.

Nice one Lynn, I absolutely agree :)

I just keep a file of any ideas I stumble upon and when the time is right for a post, I sit and write it. I am not a very frequent visitor on social bookmarking sites but the best sites of this variety are a huge inspiration. They also have the benefit that you see what is deemed popular by dozens of other people.

Hey Lisa, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. Social bookmarking sites are a great place to get post ideas but for me because everything moves so fast on bookmarking sites, I’ve found topics expire faster than I can sit and begin to write something about them. Maybe I’m just being too finicky lol

    Hi Fabrizio,

Sometimes when I run out of ideas I read my old post and write something about it again. It maybe changes of my opinion about the topic or I will recommend it again.

Hi Rebecca, thanks for stopping by the blog. I do this often too, this is a great way to elaborate deeper into parts of your old content where you originally missed out.
