How to Choose the Right Blogs to Guest Post On

by Fabrizio Van Marciano on September 19, 2011

Writing is My Hobby

As many bloggers know, guest posting is one of the best ways to generate traffic to your blog, and if you’re new to blogging then there is no better time to start than now. The earlier you begin guest writing the more you will benefit in the long term.

…But before you set off on your guest blogging endeavours, here are 4 simple factors to keep in mind, when choosing the right kinds of blogs to guest post for.

Guest Post Tip#1 Traffic – As many of us know, one of the biggest advantages of guest writing for other blog’s is to gain quality traffic back to your own blog. So when searching for blogs to guest post on, check out their Alexa traffic data to give you an idea of how much traffic that blog is generating. Many blogs publish their own monthly traffic report, which to me is a great indication, and a great way to lure in potential guest writers.

Guest Post Tip#2 Niches – Of course traffic is not the most essential element. Searching for content relevant or niche related blogs is probably more important. One of the best places to find blogs to guest write for is the comluv blog.

Guest Post Tip#3 Engaging – Also check out the level of engaging activities currently taking place on the blogs you’re hoping to guest write for. Chances are if no one is leaving a comment, or there is little sign of interaction from the blog owner, then your hard work may as well be wasted.

Guest Post Tip#4 Dofollow – Another essential factor you might want to keep in mind is to check to see if the blog you’re writing for is a dofollow blog; a dofollow blog will give you some well needed search engine juice in return for your quality and resourceful content.

So with these 4 simple tips in mind, you can now go out and find blog’s to guest post for, hey why not start with this one, you can find out more about guest writing for us here.

Hi Fabrizio,
Your Guest Post Tips were very good. As a newbie to this, I am constantly searching for insights from the Pros! Thanks so much for sharing. I particularly liked the Tip about the Alexa rating. I’ll check that out!

I find that people who share common interests and opinions tend to socialize with one another. So, when looking for guest blogging opportunities, sometimes you can find them by following links back to other bloggers’ websites in the comment section.

When you find one blog that offers the opportunity to guest blog, there is a pretty good chance that you can find other opportunities on the blogs belonging to the people who are commenting on there.

It is also a useful way to find other blogs that use Commentluv.

Glen @ how to make a website September 20, 2011 at 5:44 am

While being here in the comluv community, I noticed that there are a lot of bloggers who welcome guest posters. This is a strategy that we have not done so far and is already considering. Thanks for the tips you gave. We do appreciate it a lot.

For me, the step 4 is the best tip to look for a blog that is adequate in posting comments. The site must be a do follow blog so Google can detect it very easily and will rank your comment very highly as well. Other tips will follow after that. Thanks for sharing Fabrizio. I love to revisit again and read your other posts related to this.

PPC campaign September 20, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Fabrizio! i fully agree with your point regarding selection of niche relevant blogs for posting. in fact relevancy is the most important factor because search engines like Google only value relevant content, especially after Panda update. For traffic attraction it is also important to write on relevant blog because only on relevant blogs it is more probable to have potential quality leads. so, first thing should be taken into consideration is the Relevancy with your niche. In fact it is a right hand thumb rule for all internet marketing strategies. Your article is always marvelous, thanks a lot.

Hi PPC, thank your for the good points made in your comment, yes I certainly do agree with you that writing on content relevant blog’s to build targeted traffic and increase potential leads is essential :)

These are great filters to make sure that guest bloggers are getting the maximum benefit for their effort. I think a good point to make is that if one factor is missing doesn’t mean it could not be a good fit for guest posts. For example, if there is an engaging dofollow blog in my niche but they do not have massive traffic that may still be a good blog to post on since their audience is highly interested in my niche. In this same example I would rather post on this site than one with millions of visitors but they are not in my niche. Just my thoughts.

Good post

At the same time though you see a lot of crappy guest posts out there even on major blogs… I think the quality of the post will be a major determinant in the amount of interaction you get.

For example, receives an absolute mountain of guest posts. I still check them out but there’s only the occasional gold nugget at the moment.

Fabrizio Van Marciano September 23, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Matthew, I understand where you’re coming from. I am or was I should say a regular reader of JohnChow and even though he is one of the top bloggers that inspired me to start blogging, I find much of the guest posts and even some by John himself a total waste of time! the last post I read on was titled ‘How to cut a pineapple’, just what you’d expect to find on a how to make money online blog right?

Ana @ Como Hacer Ensayos September 28, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Your tips are right on, but still, I think that the first thing a guest blogger should ask himself is – am I prepared to write this post as if it was for my own blog?

You seriously cannot expect to get any good traffic if it can be seen that your posts have been written just like that.

Point well made Ana :) It’s important to keep that in mind essentially. I write on other niche related blogs to demonstrate to others that I have a speciality in a specific topic or niche, in which I hope they will come back to by my blog intrigued to read more.

Ana @ Como Hacer Ensayos September 29, 2011 at 4:08 pm

That should work on so many levels. Firstly, you are not writing about stuff that you are not so familiar about, you build your reputation as an expert in a certain field and, hopefully, you get the good traffic. Good for you! :)
