WordPress 3.2 Upgrade Causing Plugin Problems for your Blog?

I’m no tech geek as such let’s get that straight first, but has anyone else found that some of the plugins aren’t working correctly or at all with the new WordPress 3.2 upgrade?

This morning I’ve spent an hour or so deactivating and removing a lot of the plugins I used because they’ve now failed to function correctly. However before upgrading to WordPress 3.2 yesterday they were all working perfectly fine. Is this a problem that WordPress has? I don’t believe it to be. The problem is with the plugin authors themselves.

If you check out the comments posted on the WordPress.org forum regarding this issue you’ll know that WordPress 3.2 has been in BETA mode for a pretty long old while as well, giving enough time for the plugin authors to update their plugin services accordingly, which should by now have been made compatible with WordPress 3.2!

Nope, instead a humongous amount of WP users including myself are now having to deactivate and remove these plugins to make our WordPress site function more properly. I don’t like doing that… :/

Ok here is the small list of plugins I’ve had to deactivate from my dashboard and in light of this hope that the authors can advise us how, if or when these plugins will be upgraded to function with WordPress 3.2.

Plugins Removed

1. Flickr Photo Album by Joe Tan

2. Get Social by Riyaz

3. Semisecure Login Reimagined by Moggy

4. ViperBar by ViperChill

As mentioned this is just a few but if anyone is using a plugin that was working before upgrading to WordPress 3.2, please feel free to add them to the list in the comments section below. I Look forward to hearing from anyone with similar issues.

I am having problems as well but deactivated all of my plugins did not return things to normal. Do I have to also delete them?

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Thanks for sharing your problems with us regarding WP3.2. I’ve deactivated the plugins in questions, deleted them and also used the CleanOptions plugin to remove any orphaned files left in the database. If you’re using a cache plugin try clearing that and also the one’s in your internet browser settings so that the latest version of your blog / website is loaded. I’ve found this method to have done the job but I’m guessing that individual situations may vary, good luck.

I’ve upgraded several blogs to 3.2 and have so far found a couple of plugins that don’t work… WP Super Edit 2.4 broke the editor completely. I had to deactivate the plugin in order to edit posts in visual mode. I suppose I’ll replace it with tinyMCE Advanced. Also had the Top Level Categories plugin not work (it removes the “/category” from category links) but that’s not a surprise since the last update was in 2008. :\

I’ve found it’s very important to check a bunch of pages on the upgraded site to be sure everything is working properly! Good luck to all the upgraders out there. :)

Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your findings with us and, yes it would seem that quite a few of the plugins that have not been updated for a while is causing a few problems.

p.s. Since the requirements for WordPress have been upgraded, there’s a plugin you can get to check if your hosting is compatible with the new version. Go to the Add New plugin screen and search for “Health Check”. It gives you a quick way to see if you’re ready for the upgrade.

Any chance you’re having trouble with comments? My blog won’t let people leave them anymore since upgrading to 3.2. Kind of weird. My plugins are ok, but some difficulty has been seen. Anyway, if you’re having trouble in comments areas, could you let me know?

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Hi Dan, thanks for adding your comment. I’ve seen no issues with the comments section as of yet, but what you’re experiencing sounds frustrating. Check the discussion settings are all I can suggest. I run another two much smaller blogs which unfortunately has gone completely disorganised by the updates. Makes me wish I hadn’t bothered :) If anyone else has any issues with plugins and WP3.2 updates please do share them with us.

My site is based practically all by the Flickr Photo album plugin and with the WordPress 3.2 update, I have experimented the same problem as some of you. The visual editing is gone, but even worse, the html editing is disabled! I don’t know how this problem can be solved but I need it quick :S

    • http://websitecleanup.com Emily Bloss

Hi Sonia. Do you have any plugins that modify the editor, like WP Super Edit or tinyMCE Advanced? If so, try removing them and clearing your browser’s cache. Then try editing again. I’m having the same problem with another blog, which goes away when I remove the editor plugins.

Emily Thanks a lot for your reply! So helpful! I hadn’t got any of those type of plugins. Although everything about the Flickr Photo album works fine again after the new version of wordpress 3.2.1! It probably has fixed those bugs. Thank you!

        • Fabrizio Van Marciano

Hi Sonia, I’m pleased to hear that the new update has fixed your problems with Flickr Photo album. I’ve decided to remove this particular plugin from my blog now as it has failed to work properly completely despite all the efforts. I’ll just have to manually add photo’s from Flickr using HTML, best of luck.

I’m happy to report that the newest version of WP Super Edit works just fine with the new WordPress. :)

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

That’s great news Emily, I’ve upgraded to 3.2.1 but even so the plugins I removed are still failing to work.

I’m upgraded to WP 3.2.1 from WP 3.1.3 and was using WP Super Edit. Like you I experienced issues with it and upgraded WP Super Edit to the latest version. It seems to be working – except that some of the additional toolbar icons broke or disappeared.

Example: The “Font chooser” tool disappeared completely. The only way I could get it back was to uninstall WP Super Edit and re-install it. I also found that the “Table” tool is there, but seems to have been corrupted (the labels on the parameters are screwed up). De-installing and reinstalling Super Edit did not take care of this issue. The Table tool is one the primary reasons I had for using WP SuperEdit, as the standard editor in WordPress does not have table functionality built-in.

I also had the same problem and after spending more than an hour reading different threads about the issue, I deactivated all the plugins and things started working perfectly then I manually activated all the plugins I had been using one by one and found the culprit. It was SEO IMAGE GALLERIES.

Thanks for the help, Fabrizio! =)

Hey Zubair, thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience with the upgrade, despite having released 3.2.1 there are still some plugins not functioning correctly.

  • Carrie

Thank you for sharing this list. Mine seem fine after upgrading to WP 3.2.1, however some plug-ins that I want to add to my site – i.e. email reply notification – haven’t been tested and I receive a warning. Any suggestions for a compatible plug-in to allow my readers to receive the comments I make via email? Thanks!

    Hi Fabrizio,

I’m browsing down your ‘popular posts’ and saw this one, like yourself and others, I too have had the same problem. Mine being with Highlighter. It doesn’t show the highlighted text and comments to it on the blog anymore, this could be the answer as to why.

    Thanks for the info Fabrizio,

    ps. how’s Barry book going?

    • http://www.magnet4marketing.net Fabrizio Van Marciano

Hey Julie, thanks for stopping by. Yes I stopped using the highlighter plugin on my recipe blog because it wasn’t functioning correctly with the new WordPress updates. Hopefully the plugin will be updated to become compatible soon. As for Barry’s book I’ve been meaning to do a short little review which I will get to this week but it has been going swell, Getting between 2 and 3 new opt-ins each day so at the moment I’m pretty happy with it. It’s a good resource too.
