10 Things You Need To Know About Your Online Business

If someone had told me when I left school that one day I would become an international selling artist running a successful online art business I would have said two things to them? One, what the hell is an online business (the internet hadn’t even been invented), and two, running any type of business as far as I was concerned was something that scared the living crap out of me. I didn’t have much confident in myself to do anything like that.

Not to run myself too much down into the ground, but I can’t say that I was the brightest of individuals at school or even college.

Things You Need To Know About Your Online Business

Anyways, lets fast forward 15 years to now, and yes I run a reasonably successful online business in the arts industry, BUT I also I run several other online businesses including this blog. However my point is that it wasn’t easy, especially since I had no experience or knowledge of running a business let alone getting online.

So today I’d like to share with you 10 things that were important to me in the development of my online business and finding success with them, and if you’re starting out on your own online business venture, hopefully you can take a few things away from this post.

1. Plan first

If you’ve been thinking about setting up your own business on the internet then my first piece of advice for you is to start planning before you do anything else. Setting up a business online is not just about having an all singing and all dancing website, I wish it were sometimes. But you need to have a strategical plan for everything that you do. From creating a website to putting together an online marketing strategy to building an audience.

2. Be passionate

Passion in life as in business is absolutely everything. If you’re not passionate about your business it simply won’t work, because any obstacle that you’ll come to, be it small or big, you’ll feel like giving in. You hear the top entrepreneurs say it all the time, if you want something bad enough you’ll passionately go after it willingly.

What ever type of online business you venture into, be it a personal blog, or affiliate marketing or creating your own products or even an ecommerce business; become passionate about your work and what you do from start to end.

3. Don’t go it alone, don’t be afraid to ask

I’ve said this before many times too, if you don’t ask you don’t get or at least you’ll never know! You can find help absolutely anywhere in your quest for business success. You can start with talking to your family and friends for moral support, talk to people who have already set up online businesses that have been successful and find people in your niche industry on social media sites, blogging sites and the forums too.

There’s always going to be someone out there with more knowledge and experience than you, and that’s the great thing about it as you can approach those who do for help and advice.

4. Learn, Learn, Learn…

Learning is one of the greatest abilities anyone can be blessed with. When you learn something new, it gives you a sense of real achievement and can boost your passion for going after success even more. The internet is full of knowledge, but also get involved in reading books, online magazines and press releases. Engage in listening in on webinars, podcasts and subscribe to newsletters that offer helps and advice, it all adds to building your own mountain of knowledge.

5. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes…

One of the biggest lessons anyone can be learn from running an online business for the first time is from ‘making mistakes’ along the way. Many people view mistakes as a bad experience which shouldn’t have happened, on the contrary mistakes are a harsh reminder of what not to do the next time around. If you don’t want something to happen you have to learn the hard way, you need to make your mistakes.

6. Know Your Audience

Knowing who your consumers or site visitors are is essential if you want your site to convert. So use tools such as Google Analytics to help you understand who your audience is. Use social media and email to communicate with your clients, carryout online surveys, test various products and services, build relationships. Do as much as you can to find out what it is your visitors and customers really want from your business.

7. Make Money Before You Spend Money

One of the traps many people fall into when starting out in internet business is spending more than they need to at first. The first task on your agenda is to actually ‘make money’, so don’t be the one that goes around pouring money into needless things.

If you have money to invest into your online business do it carefully. But definitely focus your energy on getting your business to make money at the same time. Essentially time spent in building and developing your online business is much more valuable than how much money you’re putting into it, remember that next time you’re about to splash out on something you don’t need but want instead.

8. Don’t ever think you’ve done enough…

This is so easy to do, just when you think you’ve done enough, the reality of it all is that you haven’t. Running an online business is a never ending process, the online world evolves everyday and there is always something new do to, new to learn etc. Always be willing to put in 110%.

9. Don’t be dishearten by negativity.

One thing you always have to remember when you’re doing any type of business online is that, yes you will be successful in building a great website and offering great products etc, yes you will have lots of happy customers, but you won’t please everyone, and at some stage somebody is going to throw you some negative feedback. Instead of being dishearten by it, us it as fuel and deal with it in a professional manner.

10. Do It Your Way!

Finally, in Franks very own words ‘Do it Your Way’. Of course by all means be inspired and become influenced by others, but do the things you do to build your business your own way. Following trends is not always the best way, we all have our paths to success carved in life and in business, we only need to find it. What would be the point if we were all the same?

I really liked that advice: ” Make Money Before You Spend Money” – that is very important, as long as the person starts working on at least one method to generate income and stays consistent at it.

    Thanks – great tips.
