My favorites from the lists are SocialGo, Ning and Social Engine but I think if I would ever decide to build a social networking site, I would rather go for a self hosted script like Social Engine or Dolphin because that will give us more power over our sites and then the ownership to the sites will also be ours. With these hosted kind of social network sites we never know when they may shut down our site and we never are the real owners of our site

Thanks Shiva, yes I agree with you. I’ve used SocialGo before and they’re definitely one of my top pics they do offer a great range of features. I’m not too sure how user friendly Social Engine is but the fact that you can self-host and have complete control and ownership does appeal to me.
