Yesterday I shared with you a short story about how a very good friend of mine who had some serious SEO problems with his small plumbing business website, in short his SEO sucked! so in this post I’m going to share with you some effective tips on improving your websites SEO.
If you’re designing your own website perhaps through Moonfruit or a similar online site builder or WordPress even, SEO is done in pretty much the same way. Any platform that allows you to easily create a website will have some form of tools to allow you to optimise your own settings for search engine optimisation.
Ok let’s begin… Seb, I hope you’re reading this.
SEO for your Business Website!
Content
When creating content for your website i.e. your homepage, your primary objective is to sell your business to your visitors by explaining briefly the kinds of services you offer, what skills and experience you have and what makes you so different from any other services in your area.
The content of your home page should be brief I’ll say again. Keep it within two to three long paragraphs as having an about me page is where most of your content marketing and selling of your business is done.
Keywords
Once you have written your home page content you then need to look at some of the keywords that best describes your business products or services, so you can ensure that these keywords are present in the content you’ve composed. A keyword is one single word that best describes your business.
Applying SEO Settings
This process is important as it tells the search engines what your home page or your business website is all about.
Meta Title
The <Meta Title> is essentially the title of your business with the addition of one or two keywords. Here’s an example: Uncle Sam Plumber – Plumbing Services, East London
Meta Keywords
In the <Meta Keywords> section you’re likely to place between 4 and 5 primary keywords that best describes your business. Here’s an example, again if you’re a plumber then you’d select something along the lines of: plumber, plumbing services, boiler services, heating engineer… if your business covers a certain geographical area you can be more specific with your keywords or key-phrase for example: East London plumber, plumbing services, east London etc, which you’ll notice is also present in the <Meta Title>.
Meta Description
Ok in this section known as <Meta Description> you can briefly describe what your website or homepage is all about. Keep it short and relevant as most search engines have an imposed limit of around 160 characters, not words. Ensure to use two or perhaps three keywords in your Meta Description.
Basically this is website SEO in a nutshell. The process is repeated for each and every page you create within your business website.
If you’re creating an about me page which I strongly recommend that you do, you can offer a more detailed description of your business services or products. The about me page is a unique opportunity for you to do some real content marketing and ensure that your SEO settings for the page is structured around the content of your page i.e. Meta Keywords and description.

Yes I agree, there a at least a good dozen small businesses I know of that don’t get involved with SEO with their websites which is quite surprising. Not even the basics of basic SEO were familiar to some of them so I wrote this post to try and summarise the basic essential for them to understand better.
Nice little guide, however, maybe a little more emphasis on the meta keywords and description.
Meta tags and description are not as important now as they used to be around 5 years ago.
They are of course important enough not to mess up and are used as a general categorizing of content.
