A very good friend of mine has been running a plumbing business for a little over a year now and about three months ago he decided he would launch a website, since all his local competitors had one.
A few days ago I got a phone call from him explaining how he’s not getting much leads from his marketing efforts. In fact he’s currently getting around about 2 to 3 visitors per day. Considering he serves quite a small community that should be an ok figure I thought.
Having done a mild search using some of the keywords I’d expect to find him with I had no luck in identifying his website, I wasn’t at all surprised and you’ll find out why in just a tick. On the contrary I managed to find the positions of his competitors quite easily.
This is what his problem was, and I would hazard of guess it’s a problem that many small businesses face when launching a website for their business.
Having done a quick SEO analysis of his website I found zero keywords present, zero meta tags or descriptions, and content that looked like it had been written by a four year old. Hmmm ok, we could definitely work on this I thought.
The second problem is that in his effort to market his website the only thing he’d managed to do is get a listing in the printed version of the yellow pages! I won’t tell you what I thought of that.
It clearly showed that his Business Marketing and SEO sucked, badly. Sorry Seb!
If you’re going to develop a website for your business then you need to think beyond web design and fancy slogans and corporate image, although these are important factors, it’s the importance of effective search engine optimisation, content writing, marketing and promotion applied correctly that gets results.
So the moral of this story is? If you have a website for your small business, the only way to stay ahead of the game and beat off your competitors is by ensuring that your site has adequate SEO, and that you have a solid online and offline marketing strategy planned out.
