Canonical URL’s Simplified

Is the subject of using canonical URL’s baffling you? What is a canonical URL anyway? Allow me to simplify it for you. We hate reading or even writing mind boggling and confusing how to’s here at M4M, so by the time you finish reading this post you’ll no doubt be canonical expert.

First of all to clarify what a canonical URL is; it is simply a search engine friendly URL that tells the search engines what URL you want your visitors to see. For example you could probably access your website’s home page using the following URL’s.

www.myblog.com

www.myblog.com/home

myblog.com

myblog.com/home

Since there are several options available, canonicalization processes this by selecting the best URL from the list. Since most people would consider the above URL’s as being the same, the content returned from each URL may not necessarily be the same, in this case you’re then faced with the issue of duplicate content, which is a definite no, no from a webmasters point of view.

Ways to Ensure that the search engines selects the correct URL

If you’re running a self-hosted blog with a premium theme ensure it is search engine optimised and comes with some additional SEO options, Genesis Framework themes for example does just that, and additionally allows you to customise your canonical URL should you wish to.

When placing internal links in your website or blog ensure that you stick to one type of URL. For example if you use http://www.myblog.com to link to internal pages then stick to this. If you use http://myblog.com then the same applies, stick to this URL.
