How to Build a List of Email Contacts Efficiently

Building a list of email contacts can be a time consuming and challenging task. We would all love to jump straight in and have ourselves something like 5,000 email contacts in our email marketing database, but the truth is this, in my mind an effective email contacts list can only be achieved over time and efficiently rather than quickly and inefficiently.

So how does one go about building an email contacts list efficiently? Well there are many ways you can do this, however there are only several effective ways in which we’ll take a look at in more detail.

Google Docs / Create an Opt-in Form

You can use Google Docs to create custom email sign up forms to place on your website’s or blog’s home page. When someone signs up, the email data is collected in your document file within your Google Docs account. This is an effective and simply way to set yourself up to collecting email data and above all its completely FREE. For more information on using Google Docs and custom forms visit Google Docs

Client Data Collection

Client data collection or CDC is the process of collecting email addresses from your customer’s orders. This is another great way to build an effective list of contacts and because it is from a source i.e. clients that has already done business with you, it means you can target an already established audience that will be more willing to do further business with you, providing that their original experience in using your services was a pleasant one at that. Just make sure that your customer’s are initially aware that they are automatically opted into receiving your email newsletters upon your receipt of their order, and that they can opt-out at anytime.

Buy Email Contacts

You can buy email contacts from several online data houses that specialise in specific bulk email listings to target your individual market. Although this isn’t the best form of building an email contacts list as (A) it can cost considerably, and (B) there is no guarantee that you will receive a list specifically designed to target 100% of your desired market.

Offline Marketing

You can add a slogan such as ‘Join Our Emailing List’ on the back of your business cards, letterheads and compliment slips, as well as any media advertisements that you engage in.

Write an eBook

This is by far one of the best ways to build an emailing list quickly and efficiently. Why not write yourself an eBook? An eBook is basically an electronic book. Your eBook can be about anything, for example; offer a small amount of your expertise in ten or so pages and give it away freely to those who subscribe to your email newsletter. With this form of marketing you can also publish details of your business in your eBook and also add a little bit about whom you are and your copyright statement. By writing an eBook you not only get to build an email contacts list quickly and efficiently, but you also get to advertise and market your business at the same time providing some valuable information to your subscribers, which will make them want to come back to find out more about what you have to offer.
